Newton Diehl Baker (1871-1937), secrétaire d'Etat à la Guerre des
Etats-Unis, arrive à Paris, le 11 mars 1918, puis part pour deux
jours et demi d'inspection du front tenu par les troupes
américaines. C'est à ce titre qu'il envisage le 19 mars de
visiter Domjevin, tenu par le 166ème régiment d'infanterie
américain, mais...

March 18. On way to the front the secretary stopped at the
headquarters of General de Castelnau, commanding the group of
armies of the East. The general remarked upon the excellent
feeling between the French and American soldiers, his confidence
in the American troops, and his satisfaction with the work of
the Rainbow, which is serving with his group of armies.
March 19. The secretary got under way at 5:30 A.M. With him, in
addition to his own party, were General Menoher, Col. MacArthur
and Col. Hough of the 42nd Division. The party stopped en route
to inspect the 3rd Battalion of the 166th Regiment, and the
secretary made an informal talk to the men. The route lay to
Benamenil, where an escort formed to take the secretary out to
the farthest wires near Blemery, by way of the village of
Domjevin. But Domjevin was undergoing such a fierce bombardment
at the time that General Menoher decided the party could not go
through there. Returning to Benamenil, the secretary, with Col.
de Chambrun as guide, went first to Badonvillers and thence into
the front line. The point where the secretary penetrated to the
tip of the line was northeast of Badonvillers and east of the
farm of le Chimais. |

Secteur de Domjevin
Nous effectuons des tirs de contre-batterie par 155 sur les
batteries des Amienbois et du bois de Sauxsure, et des tirs de
harcèlement par 75 et A.L .
L'artillerie allemande continue à harceler les routes de
Domjevin-Blémerey, Domjevin-Reillon et contre-bat activement
toutes nos batteries.
La circulation observée en arrière du front ennemi est toujours
très intense. Mr Backer secrétaire d'état au Ministre de la
Guerre Américain rend visite au colonel du 166e RIA dans la
matinée . Mais trois extraits
des films du US Signal Corps, nous
montrent bien à la date du 19 mars 1918 la présence du
Secrétaire d'Etat à la guerre à Domjevin, en visite au quartier
général, avec un plan de l'arrière de l'église, puis le départ
de Domjevin en voiture.
Il s'avère donc que Newton D. Baker s'est bien rendu dans la
commune de Domjevin ce 19 mars au matin, mais que c'est sans
doute des bombardements sur la ligne de front toute proche qui
l'ont amené à ne pas se rendre dans les tranchées.
